How does social media impact you?
Brayden Currin and Shaina Afful, members of Convene Communities core team, discuss social media and how it Impacts you. The discussion sparked after the Convene Communities team watched the Social Delima documentary on Netflix. They all found it to be fascinating and shared their thoughts during their team meeting. So they decided to bring the discussion to the podcast to see what input listeners want to contribute to the conversation.
Should there be an age requirement that parents set before allowing their children to open social media accounts?
In the online world, there is a growing concern about the usage of social media platforms, not only for children but also for everyone. The Social Delima documentary described how social media affects humans psychologically, aiding in the increase of depression and suicide, increasing the chances of cyber fraud, and collecting personal and private information to improve Ai’s usage to predict human behaviors and make suggestions.
Auto suggestions on social media
For many people, they see the suggested ad’s in a negative light. However, Brayden shares his perspective on how this can be beneficial when searching and shopping for particular items. However, it can be a bit creepy when you discuss something and then open your phone and see the suggested ads based on the discussion you just had. These instances can make you feel like your privacy is being invaded and that “they’re” listening to you to feed the internet algorithms.
Creating A False Reality
The “LIKE” factor – many of us tend to judge ourselves based on our online status and sociability determined by the number of likes we get. In our heads, we think that we should have a certain number of likes, and if we don’t get those numbers, we somehow are less than when in reality, the numbers are primarily determined by the algorithms that determine who and how many people see your post.
The “Highlight” reel – it’s easy to get caught up in the comparison trap. We tend to forget that most of us naturally only put the ‘good’ aspects of our lives on the internet. Many people find themselves continually comparing themselves with others based on the online presence that people have.
It’s Not All Bad
Even though many of us can agree that social media has drastically impacted and influenced our society, it’s not all bad. Social media has enhanced the ability to connect and communicate with distant relatives and friends. It has also bridged the gap of being able to communicate with people worldwide and transmit information.
Though Convene Communities is not necessarily a social media platform, it does share some of the standard features and functionalities.
Some of the key differences is that Convene Communities:
• Doesn’t collect or store your personal information
• Doesn’t have algorithms to suggest or influence your behavior or choices
• Allows you to interact with others anonymously
• When you publish content, all of your members will see if instead of the systems picking and choosing what you see
Convene Communities works hand in hand with your other social media platforms.
